Lake Jocassee

Lake Jocassee is a large reservoir in Upstate South Carolina that covers an area of 7,500 acres and goes 300 feet deep. It was made in 1971 by the state working with Duke Power. The lake is special because it gets water from the clean and cold rivers of the Appalachian mountains, which keeps its water cool and clear all year. The Jocassee Dam, making the lake, is 385 feet high and 1,750 feet long. The lake is in Deviles Fork State Park.

Even though most buildings were taken down before the lake was filled, divers recently found a lodge that's still there under 300 feet of water. Mount Carmel Baptist Church Cemetery, seen in the movie Deliverance (1972), is now under 130 feet of lake water.
